What you will learn
- Turn a layout into a model-level materials record
- Stage a path-light run before permanent concealment
- Validate operation without treating a planning estimate as approval
Prerequisites
- Current fixture, transformer, cable, connector, and control instructions
- A completed load and voltage-drop review
- A confirmed code-compliant power source and transformer location
Materials
- Specified low-voltage path fixtures
- Compatible transformer and controls
- Manufacturer-approved cable and connectors
- Layout markers
- Suitable measurement equipment
Workflow
- 01
Confirm the current design record
Check exact model numbers, quantities, fixture loads, operating ranges, cable runs, transformer capacity, planned tap, and required accessories against current sources.
- 02
Mark positions after dusk and in daylight
Use the nighttime view to assess glare, shadow, and spacing, then inspect the same route in daylight for utilities, roots, drainage, mowing, traffic, and service access.
- 03
Stage the run
Lay out fixtures and cable without final burial or concealment. Maintain manufacturer-required separation, mounting, routing, and connection practices.
- 04
Connect only as directed
De-energize equipment as required and follow the exact connector, cable, transformer, grounding, and control instructions. Do not improvise connector types or splice methods.
For multiple runs, label each run and record its zone and total documented load. This follows Kichler's current troubleshooting and installation guidance and makes later measurements traceable to the load schedule.
- 05
Energize, measure, and aim
Use the manufacturer's startup and measurement procedure. For the represented Kichler fixture records, confirm operation within each exact model's documented 9–15 V range at the directed measurement points, then make final aiming adjustments after dark.
- 06
Complete and document
Only after validation, finish the installation according to current instructions. Save model numbers, source links, load schedule, cable map, tap selection, measurements, and photos of concealed junction locations for future service.
Common errors
Spacing every fixture uniformly
Place light for navigation and composition; verify the scene after dark before making positions permanent.
Sizing by fixture count
Use exact model-level VA or the manufacturer-prescribed load value, plus the actual run design.
Treating any low-voltage parts as mutually compatible
Verify operating range, transformer taps, capacity, controls, cable, connectors, listing, and installation instructions.

Links support factual statements; they do not turn manufacturer claims into independent measurements.
