Project brief
Prerequisites
- A site sketch with fixture targets and proposed cable runs
- A code-compliant outdoor receptacle and installation location evaluated for the selected transformer
- The current instructions for every selected fixture, transformer, control, connector, and cable
Required tools
- Tape measure
- Weather-resistant marking materials
- Manufacturer-specified hand tools
- A suitable voltmeter used according to its instructions
What the example uses
Kichler Integra 200 lm 35° Accent Light
Example 200 lm, 35° accent fixtures; 2.6 VA each in the referenced Kichler table.
Alternatives require a full load and compatibility recalculation: 16302AZT27, 16303AZT27Kichler 75 W Pro-Contractor Transformer
Capacity candidate for the example load. Recalculate if fixture model or quantity changes.
Alternatives require a full load and compatibility recalculation: 15PC150SSPurchase actions appear only when the exact Amazon ASIN and documented system compatibility have both been verified. This checklist does not imply installation approval.
Compatibility gates
- Every fixture must accept a transformer output tap used by the design.
- Total documented fixture VA must remain within transformer and circuit limits.
- Cable, connections, controls, enclosure, environment, and installation method must follow current manufacturer instructions and applicable code.
Workflow
- 01
Map the lighting jobs
Mark the target, viewing direction, proposed fixture location, cable route, and distance for each light. Keep fixtures out of normal sight lines where practical.
- 02
Create a model-level load schedule
Record the exact fixture model, documented VA, quantity, operating-voltage range, and source. Do not substitute watts for VA when the manufacturer supplies a VA value.
- 03
Screen the transformer
Add fixture VA, apply a clearly stated planning reserve, and check that at least one transformer tap falls inside every fixture operating range. Use the Cart Decisions planner as a screen, not an approval.
- 04
Review each cable run
Evaluate one-way length, conductor size, total VA on the run, load distribution, topology, connections, and transformer tap using the current manufacturer method.
- 05
Stage, inspect, and measure
Follow current product instructions, keep all safety warnings in force, and validate operation and voltage at the manufacturer-directed locations before permanent concealment or burial.
Optional upgrades
- A larger compatible transformer when documented future load justifies it
- Manufacturer-supported control accessories
- Additional home runs when voltage-drop review supports that layout
Safety boundaries
- Line-voltage work, receptacle suitability, bonding, grounding, burial depth, and local code requirements may require a qualified professional.
- Do not modify listed equipment or exceed product, circuit, or conductor ratings.
- Use current product instructions; this review draft is not a substitute for them.
What to check when it does not work
The farthest fixture is dim or unstable
De-energize as required, inspect model-level load and connections, then measure delivered voltage using the manufacturer procedure. Review tap, cable size, run length, load placement, and topology.
The transformer protection opens
Stop and identify overload, short-circuit, damaged cable, connection, moisture, or equipment faults before re-energizing. Do not increase protection or bypass safeguards.
The beam produces glare
Re-aim after dark, change mounting position or beam distribution, and keep the source out of normal viewing angles.
Sources and evidence
Links support factual statements; they do not turn manufacturer claims into independent measurements.
