| Project | Board direction | Verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Local dashboard or small service | Raspberry Pi 5 | RAM, storage, cooling, network, power |
| Compact low-load network endpoint | Zero 2 W | 512 MB memory, Wi-Fi, adapters, headers |
| Sensor or actuator controller | Pico 2 W | Microcontroller firmware, GPIO voltage, drivers |
| Camera project | Pi computer plus camera | Camera variant, CSI cable, lens or focus, storage |
Separate computers from microcontrollers
Raspberry Pi 5 and Zero 2 W can run Raspberry Pi OS and general applications. Pico 2 W is a microcontroller board. It is excellent for deterministic sensor and control work, but it is not a smaller drop-in Linux server.
Write the full accessory list
The board price is not the project price. Record the power specification, storage, cooling, enclosure, display cable, GPIO header, sensor voltage, and any required adapters. Raspberry Pi 5 has different power and case requirements from Raspberry Pi 4, and Zero-family camera and display connections differ from standard cables.
Plan updates and recovery
Keep an image or configuration backup, document credentials and network settings, and decide how the device will be safely updated. A project is not finished when it boots once; it is finished when you can recover it.
FAQ
Should a beginner buy Raspberry Pi 5 for every project?
No. Its performance is useful for desktop and service workloads, but a Zero 2 W or Pico 2 W may better fit a compact, low-power, or embedded job.
Is a power supply interchangeable across Pi models?
Not safely by assumption. Follow the current product specification; Raspberry Pi recommends 5 V / 5 A USB-C power for full Raspberry Pi 5 capability.
